Following the publication of a humorous article in the 1960s that referred to the students as "randomized tools," the experts, or rather the geeks who used this word on a regular basis, converted it into slang. The definitions of stranger, outsider, weird, peculiar, unfamiliar, and surprising became ingrained in the word and became commonplace when it was included in the Hacker's Dictionary.
