Turtles Can’t Live Without Their Shells!
There is no way that we can enjoy the hilarity of turtle memes without also engaging in some entertaining trivia! The idea that turtles depend on their shells for survival is something that a lot of people find to be quite surprising.
As stated by North Carolina State University, the shell of a turtle is essential to its survival and performs tasks that are comparable to those of a human spine (1). In addition to bone, the shell is composed of keratin, which is the same material that is found in human hair and nails.
Additionally, the shell serves as a protective barrier, sheltering turtles from hazardous weather conditions, potential predators, and exposure to the sun. Failure to properly repair a shell can result in infections or even death.
However, contrary to what is frequently depicted in cartoons and movies, turtles are unable to emerge from their shells. This is another fascinating truth about turtles. On account of the fact that the shell is a component of their skeletal system, it is not possible for them to deliberately leave it. As far as the National Wildlife Federation is concerned, the most comparable example is the softshell turtle, which at first glance does not appear to have a hard shell (2).
