I get that there are people who like the tall and short looking couples but this is unreasonable now and I can’t come up with anything like…..what should I make of this it’s uncomfortable to see them be presented this way these unreasonable proportions and body mass makes me feel like they’re being sexualised.

In Defense of Maxi (Under The Oak Tree)
So, this isn’t gonna be super long since it’s late for me but I just wanted to write this now.
This is just a defense of Maxi, not Riftan, not the story, not their relationship, just Maxi. I see a lot of hate for her and it’s sad since I personally adore her.
A lot of people dislike her because she’s “weak”, stutters, and has a hard time standing up for herself. Also because she doesn’t do the satisfying thing, which is to communicate with Riftan about her insecurities and upbringing. I can understand why these things annoy people, but I don’t think she deserves the hate.
Maxi is a character that has undergone severe and prolonged abuse her entire life, well into adulthood. This abuse was not just physical but psychological. For her entire life she has been told she is worthless and treated as such. She has been taught to keep her mouth shut about her own wants and needs, and not to talk about the things that happen at home because she “deserves it”, and because she’s been convinced that revealing it would only make her look broken and worthless.
Abuse does things to your brain, one of which is stunt you. So because she’s been controlled and abused all her life by her father, she still has the fear responses of a child in that she is unsure of herself and cowers in the face of authority. She has never been in a position of power before, it’s unfamiliar, and it scares her because she fears she’ll do something wrong like she’s always been told she will. Being inexperienced makes her feel even worse since other people seem to expect more from her than she knows how to give. Her insecurities and mental anguish are shown often, and while I see a lot of people complaining about how it makes her seem “pathetic”, I relate a lot to it and I think it’s realistic. She’s been with Riftan for what, a year? Maybe? It takes more than a year of good treatment to change the effects of a lifetime of trauma.
However, while the progress has been slow, Maxi is developing into a stronger more confident character. She’s standing up for herself, not only to Riftan but to his Knights. She’s making an active effort to do more for their people, to help out, to boost morale, to make herself more powerful. She’s learning magic and gaining not only confidence in her abilities but in herself for her accomplishments. Her relationship with Ruth is one of the better parts of the series, because he helps her grow in so many ways, it’s refreshing, and their friendship showcases parts of her character that we wouldn’t see otherwise. She is steadily increasing her powers and gaining respect among the people of Anatol, among Riftan’s Knights, and making a name for herself outside of being Riftan’s wife or her father’s daughter. She isn’t weak, she’s actually very strong. Especially since Riftan isn’t the best support system or greatest at communicating or maintaining a healthy relationship, but she’s even calling him out on his BS now!
She is a flawed character and I love her for it. I admit that the translation of her stutter is kind of cringe, but she literally has a disability, she shouldn’t be faulted for it (that’s literally exactly what the villains of the story do). Not to mention, she’s also actively working on improving her speech.
My point is that Maxi is a well-developed character. Her trauma and its effects are well done, her character development is amazing and satisfying, and contrary to the rumors she is strong.
